Over the last several years, I’ve focused much of my career on agile software development, and I’ve loved every minute of it. Agile software development will always be near and dear to my heart and will still always be at the forefront of my thinking about software delivery. But there is a shift happening in the industry and it has me extremely excited. That shift is the acceleration of artificial intelligence technologies being used in enterprise software development. It excites me because it’s a new way of looking at solving problems, and gives us the ability to create new capabilities in enterprise applications that simply weren’t possible before. This shift also introduces new technologies, and all the fun challenges that come with them. There is also an integration between business agility and artificial intelligence that I believe is yet to be deeply explored, and there are many opportunities to figure out how agile software development practices will work with more exploratory work that typically comes with AI solutions.
Over the last several months, I have dug into AI technologies and how enterprises are using them. I’ve done many different things to educate myself on business use cases, technologies, and process. My book stack is high, and I’ve completed course work on Coursera. And I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface! Which honestly, is what makes this so exciting – it’s an entire new domain that has largely existing in academia, huge Silicon Valley firms, and the back rooms of financial services firms and is now starting to appear on the radar of every other organization.
I’ve said before that if you want to be in software development, you are signing up for a career where learning is required. This is yet another instance of that. It’s exciting times and I’m looking forward to continue to dive into how AI in enterprise software development evolves.
